Today we are going to provide some information to young engineers on the advantages of both design and site experience at the start of your career and continuing to get an insight into both as your career progresses.

The advantage of getting experience in both early on are as follows:

  1. You will get a better understanding of practicalities on site and the way your design an accommodate this. It will prove invaluable in the long term.
  2. Having experience in both will improve you as a designer in the long term.
  3. Having worked on site you will get a great deal of experience in seeing both temporary works and permanent works.
  4. You will see the pressures of people working on site and how clear, concise information received early is such a great help to the construction team.
  5. Starting your career in design and then working on site for a few years provides a great opportunity to gain some technical knowledge at the beginning of your career and see it implemented on site.
  6. Personally, having worked in Australia in site for 3 years as a site engineer and can honestly say 10 years later, it was one of the best decisions I ever made as it provided great learning and understanding of how the industry works on site.
