Tips to Structural Engineering Graduates 2021

Having recently been asked by several students on what to expect when entering the profession after university. Here are some tips and advice we would give to graduates entering the industry in 2021.

  • Every day is a school day. You will never stop learning in the construction and engineering profession. Even after 13 years in the industry, you will still feel like you know nothing at times.
  • Start the chartership process as early as possible and aim to get chartered. If it is the structural design side of the industry you are planning on entering the IStructE exam is a great aim.
  • Always ask questions, be curious about your design. Consult and ask questions with senior engineers this will help bring your level of experience up yo a higher level quicker. The practical experience on how to build jobs is invaluable.
  • Be willing to read and study and stay keen on learning new technologies and skills.

  • Take as many risks and get yourself into as much trouble as possible. Figuring out problems from different projects is the best way to learn.
  • Keep track of past projects this will invaluable when you do go to attain your chartership.
  • The first few years you will feel that you know nothing but that’s totally normal.
  • Try and get both site and design experience. This will prove invaluable as your career progresses. Ask questions to the people working on site their practical experience of building projects is a great way of improving your knowledge.
  • There will be loads of opportunities to work in various sectors and travel if you want, engineering and construction are worldwide industries.
